Central Valley Local School district is dedicated to preparing their students as 21st century learners. To achieve this goal, the district must implement forms of technology that enhance student learning, as well as prepare them for the technological advances of the future.

Some parents of our students have asked administration about distance learning opportunities, post-secondary and/or advanced placement credits for courses such as Mandarin Chinese, Japanese, etc. In order to make these options available to our students, the administration has decided that the most financially feasible way to offer these courses is by utilizing Tri River Educational Computer Association's (TRECA) Digital Academy. This also meets the passage of Ohio Senate Bill 311 that introduces the new concept of credit flexibility to high school students.

Students must also pass a unit in Financial Literacy in order to graduate. Whether students have transferred in to our district from an out-of-state school which didn't require this course, the student did not have the course met within their schedule, or the student did not achieve a passing grade in this unit, the district has decided to offer this unit online, developed and monitored by staff at Central Valley High School
.
Since one of the examples of how credit flexibility can be earned is through distance learning classes, Central Valley thought offering online Mandarin Chinese and Japanese courses would be a good way to add more language offerings to its Foreign Language Department while also making alternative options available to students. The offerings of an online Health course and an online Financial Literacy course will be a convenient way for students to fulfill the graduation requirements that mandate each of those courses be taken by the end of the senior year.

Central Valley Local Schools is also anticipating the retirement of two long-term Health teachers from the high school. The administration has decided not to replace those teachers, thus saving the salary and benefits afforded to those positions, and instead will offer students the option of taking the course at the school with the remaining health teacher, or complete the course online through TRECA's digital academy (at a fraction of the cost of hiring two more health instructors).

Listed below are a few videos that will not only help explain our goal of online learning, but there are also two short introductory videos about Moodle - the course management system that Central Valley Local Schools will be using in the future.
21st Century Learning Matters
It is produced for the state of Colorado, but is applicable to any educational system.
